Loggers take one from Blues

TACOMA, Wash.  Whitman was shooting for a series sweep, but Saturday's 7-2 Northwest Conference loss to host University of Puget Sound allowed the Loggers to avoid that fate on their home grass at Logger Field.

Whitman (15-15, 8-9 NWC) had taken both ends of a doubleheader on Friday and jumped on UPS (14-14, 10-8) with a run in the top of the first in Saturday's outing.

But the Loggers plated four runs in the bottom of the first to take their first lead of the three-game set and made the cushion stand up over the next eight innings.

Consecutive two-out singles by Joseph Zimmer and Lucas Thrun put a runner in scoring position in the opening half inning. Kyle Reisman did his job and pounded a double into center field that scored Zimmer for a 1-0 Whitman lead.

Puget Sound's four runs off Blues starting pitcher John Lyon reversed that advantage; one that Whitman was never able to overcome.

The three-run deficit was trimmed by one in the top of the fourth when Reisman led off the frame with a single into short center, then moved up to second on a sacrifice bunt by Brett Williams.

After a fly out to center the next batter, Matthew Sox, drove in Reisman with a long single and moved to second on a throw home that failed in its attempt to prevent the run. Sox was left at second, however, ending the Whitman threat.

That would be the Blues' final run in the game, while UPS would add one in the bottom of the fourth and then two more in the eighth to cement the victory.

Zimmer had a solid day at the plate with three hits and a run scores, and Reisman collected a pair of hits, walked once, scored once and notched an RBI.

Lyon (0-2) took the loss on the mound for Whitman, lasting two batters into the fourth and allowing five of the Loggers' seven runs.

Puget Sound starter Michael Warn (6-1) got the win after a 6-inning outing, surrendering two runs on seven hits and four walks.

Whitman is back at home in Borleske Stadium for its next series, back to back doubleheaders Saturday and Sunday against visiting Lewis & Clark College.
