WALLA WALLA, Wash. Whitman won seven straight to open Sunday's Northwest Conference men's tennis match against visiting Pacific (Ore.), eventually finishing off the Boxers for an 8-1 victory.
The 11th-ranked Blues elevate their conference record to 3-0 and to 5-2 overall, while Pacific evens its marks at 1-1 and 2-2, respectively.
A dominating performance in doubles set the tone for Whitman.
Rajul Chikkalingaiah and
Ben Kirsh teamed up for a quick 8-1 victory at the No. 3 position, followed by an 8-0 victory at 1-doubles by
Daniel Foster and
Alex Hwang.
The sweep was complete with
Andreas Mueller-Immergluck and
Gary Ho's 8-4 win at No. 2.
In the ensuing singles bouts, Hwang earned the first Whitman point with his 6-1, 6-1 defeat of Sean Murphy at No. 4.
That win left the clinching point up for grabs, one that
Gary Ho seized with his love and 2 win over Sage Katayama at 2-singles.
Kirsh at No. 1, Chikkalingaiah at No. 5 and
Adam Rapoport at No. 6 each added straight-set victories to pad the cushion. Kirsh's victory included a rally from a 2-5 deficit in the opening set, from which he won the next 11 games to win 7-5, 6-0.
Whitman takes to the road for its next matches, a pair of league affairs, opening the weekend Saturday at Lewis & Clark College followed by a Sunday match at George Fox University.
