FOREST GROVE, Ore. Whitman's 27th-ranked women's tennis team finished off host Pacific (Ore.) University with a clinching point from senior
Jenna Gilbert Sunday afternoon, eventually downing the Boxers 9-0 in a Northwest Conference match.
The victory lifts Whitman to 2-1 within the league and 3-4 overall, while Pacific slips to 0-2 in the NWC and evens its overall record to 2-2.
The Blues swept the doubles match to carry a 3-0 lead into singles play.
Mary Hill posted the fourth Whitman point with her 6-2, 6-0 win at No. 2 singles, setting the table for Gilbert who clinched the match with a 1 and 2 win over Callie Oyama at 6-singles.
The opening point of the day was an 8-0 shutout win at 3-doubles by
Kattie Pak and
Anastasiya Redkina. Hill and
Hanna Greenberg added another point at 1-doubles and the sweep was complete with
Andrea Gu and
Lori Sheng winning in the No. 2 slot.
Following Gilbert's clinching point in singles, Redkina, Greenberg, Sheng then Gu added straight-set wins at Nos. 5, 3, 4 and 1, respectively, to close out the shutout for the Blues.
Whitman is back at home for its next two matches, taking on George Fox University on Saturday and Lewis & Clark College on Sunday in a pair of league bouts.
