McMINNVILLE, Ore. Whitman scored 11 consecutive goals during one phase of Saturday's Northwest Conference women's lacrosse game at Linfield College, eventually rolling to an 18-4 victory that gave the Blues their fourth win in a row.
Within its win streak Whitman (5-4, 4-1 NWC) has defeated its opponents by 9, 13, 13 and 14 goals. On the other bench, the Wildcats (6-6, 4-3) saw their two-game win streak halted.
Initially on Saturday at Maxwell Field it was
Lindsay Schwartz who was unstoppable.
The reigning NWC player of the year scored the game's first three goals, including one just 31 seconds into the contest.
For that first marker, Schwartz found herself with the ball atop the 12-meter fan. Doubled up by Wildcat defenders she dodged one defender to the right with a quick shoulder fake then split the two and raced in on goal where she buried her shot between the wickets of goalkeeper Kylee Duey.
On the second goal one minute later, she snared a feed from
Ali Pope and worked herself through a threesome of Wildcat defenders to put one into the top corner over Duey's shoulder.
The third came off a feed from
Sage Ali who had circled behind the goal drawing defenders with her. A quick flick of her crosse sent the ball back in front to Schwartz who put in her third of the game in a span of 2 minutes and 14 seconds.
Linfield stopped the onslaught with a goal of their own, but Schwartz' start had ignited the Whitman attack, which answered with 11 consecutive goals.
Nina Moore started the string, off an assist from
Ellie Teare at the 17:51 mark of the first half.
By the time the goal streak had ended, with Teare scoring from an assist by Ali, the Blues had forged a 14-1 lead over a span of time that pushed four minutes into second-half action.
Within that 11-goal explosion, Moore scored three times, and
Hannah Miller,
Isabel Regonini, Ali and Teare each added two tallies.
Whitman led 11-1 at the halftime break and spent much of the second half increasing its time of possession while the Wildcats chalked up a few unimportant goals.
Schwartz, Moore, Miller, Ali and Regonini finished the contest with three goals each, while Teare added two and
Ali Pope scored once.
With the Whitman attack generating 39 shots at one end of the turf, the Whitman defense was busy limiting Linfield to just seven shots in 60 minutes. The defense also played a disciplined game, allowing just one free-position attempt all afternoon.
In goal,
Kate Whittingham backed up her defenders with three saves.
Whitman also won the battle in the circle, building a 17-7 advantage in draw controls with Moore's six leading the Blues.
Next up for Whitman is a battle for the top spot in the league standings. The Blues play host George Fox University -- unbeaten in NWC play and riding a three-game win streak -- Sunday at 1 p.m. in Newberg, Oregon.
