TACOMA, Wash. Whitman's 23rd-ranked men's tennis team rolled to a 9-0 Northwest Conference win Sunday at University of Puget Sound, closing out the road portion of the Blues' league slate.
The victory lifted Whitman's conference record to 7-0 and improved its overall mark to 12-7, while UPS drops to 0-7 in the league and 0-11 overall.
Whitman's remaining NWC match is a home outing Saturday against Whitworth University followed by the postseason conference tournament a week later.
Sunday against the Loggers it was the doubles pairings that pushed Whitman in front early by sweeping the three matches.
Luke Targett and
Nishaant Limaye paired up for and 8-6 win at 1-doubles,
Andreas Mueller-Immergluck and
Eric Lim pounded out an 8-2 win at No. 2, and the tandem of
Bayard Blair and
Azur Ali raced to an 8-1 win at No. 3.
Ali, Blair and Mueller-Immergluck each added wins during singles action to further Whitman's chase of the shutout.
Ali was unrelenting in his 6-0, 6-1 at No. 6, while Blair rolled to a 2 and 3 win at No. 5. It was in the 2-singles slot where Mueller-Immergluck registered a 2 and 2 victory.
Also winning there singles matches in straight sets were
Rajul Chikkalingaiah at No. 1,
Bear Lee at No. 3, and
Jack Fleming at No. 4.
Sunday's victory assures at least a tie for the regular-season NWC title, and with a win over second-place Lewis & Clark College earlier in the season the Blues own the tiebreaker that would be employed to determine the host of the postseason league tournament.
