SPOKANE, Wash. – The Whitman College women's soccer team had hoped to end its conference road swing on a winning note but instead came up empty, falling 3-1 at Whitworth in Northwest Conference action Wednesday at Whitworth Soccer Field.
The loss keeps the Blues winless on the season at 0-6-1 and 0-3 in league play while the Pirates improve to 4-1-1 and 2-0-1 in the Northwest Conference.
Sofia Ellington was active up front for the Blues and scored her team's lone goal in the 67
th minute to make a game of it at 3-1. She nearly put in her second but her strike with less than 10 minutes to play bounced off the crossbar.
Elly Wolfe made eight saves in net for the Blues with Molly Webster logging four saves for the Pirates.
Whitworth dominated much of the first half but only carried a one-goal lead heading into halftime. Arielle Van Peurem's goal from Kelly Wurcherer in the 11
th minute was the half's lone goal.
The Blues started to possess more in their attacking half after the break but that didn't stop Whitworth from extending its lead. Coby Yoshimura's goal in the 61
st minute put her team up 2-0 then the Pirates tacked on a third just over two minutes later.
The Blues return home for one match this weekend, hosting Pacific on Saturday, Sept. 22 at 12:00 p.m.
