Blues Fall In Double Overtime To Carroll College

Box Score WALLA WALLA, Wash.Sofia Ellington scored one goal and assisted on another but it wasn't enough as the Whitman College women's soccer team went to overtime for the second straight game, this time falling 3-2 in double overtime to Carroll College in their home opener, Saturday at the Whitman Athletic Fields.

Lizzie Sheldon netted all three goals for the Fighting Saints (1-4) who notched their first win of the season. She pounced on a ricocheted shot from McKenna Payne to score the game winner at the 103:46 mark in overtime.

Freshman Elly Wolfe went the distance in goal in her first career action for the Blues. She posted seven saves including several point blank shots in the second half. Sydney Green recorded five saves Carroll.

The Blues (0-2-1) looked prime to grab their first win of the season when Kristen Brady scored off the bench to put Whitman up 2-1 in the 59th minute. With chances on both ends, Carroll finally got its equalizer when Sheldon scored on a loose ball in the 81st minute.

The early moments of the game saw a pair of Whitman counters but Carroll would start to control possession with Sheldon getting her team on the board with a goal in the 19th minute. The Blues would regain momentum as the half came to a close, resulting in Ellington's goal to get the Blues on the board, scoring after feed from Marissa Meyer to even the game at 1-1 heading into halftime.

The Blues return to action Sunday against the College of Idaho. Kickoff is set for 2pm at the Whitman Athletic Fields.
