Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

No. 4 Men's Basketball Tops Linfield, Sits Alone At The Top

MCMINNVILLE, Ore. - The Blues were outshot both inside and outside of the three-point line, but aggression on the offensive boards led to second chance points and a 98-89 win by the No. 4 Whitman College men's basketball team over previously undefeated Linfield, Friday night at Ted Wilson Gymnasium.

Joey Hewitt led a well-balanced scoring effort with 12 points, but his 1-6 shooting from beyond the arc pointed to a statline with the Wildcats shooting better in three point field goal percetage(40%-31%). Nevertheless, the Blues led comfortably throughout and, coupled with George Fox's loss, stand as the lone unbeaten team in the Northwest Conference.

The Blues (13-1, 5-0 NWC) dominated the offensive glass with an 18-8 offensive rebound advantage leading to 24 points off turnovers. Four players scored in double figures with seven others scoring six or more points. Hewitt also added a game-high seven rebounds shared by Linfield's Liam O'Reilly.

Max Lommen was the game's high scorer, posting 21 points for Linfield who fell from the ranks of the league's unbeaten with a now 4-1 mark and 13-1 overall.

The Blues got off to a hot start, opening up a 9-2 lead just 2:26 into the game. Cedric Jacobs-Jones scored his team's first two buckets followed by a triple from Michael Gutierrez.

Linfield stemmed the tide and worked itself back into the game. Back-to-back baskets from Dempsey Roggenbuck shaved the lead to three points but the Blues quickly responded with seven straight points to take a 24-14 lead with 7:27 to play until halftime. The Wildcats kept the deficit to under 10 points for much of the remainder of the half, but a quick six points in the final 1:43 put the Blues up 13 heading into the break.

The run continued out of the locker room and, after Trevor Osborne's three pointer just under four minutes into the second half, the Blues held a comfortable 59-41 lead. Osborne then helped push the lead to 24 points after his and-one three pointer with JoJo Wiggins hitting on a jumper and extending the lead to 78-50, Whitman's largest of the game.

Linfield connected on a trio of three-pointers inside of two minutes but it was too little too late.

The Blues play the second of their back-to-back on Saturday with a visit to George Fox. Tip is set for 6:00 p.m.
