Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

No. 24 Women's Hoops Upended By UPS, Falls From Ranks of The Unbeaten

WALLA WALLA, Wash. - In a battle of Northwest Conference heavyweights, the No. 24 Whitman College women's basketball team scratched and clawed but would come up short in a 75-67 loss to the University of Puget Sound on Saturday at the Sherwood Center.

Makana Stone scored a team-high 14 points on 7-11 shooting for the Blues (13-4, 7-1 NWC) who fell from the ranks of the league's unbeaten and lost at home for just the second time this season. Whitman shot a respectable 43% from the floor but played from behind for much of the fourth period.

The Loggers (13-3, 6-2 NWC) rode the shoulders of Jamie Lange and Elizabeth Prewitt. Lange posted a double double with a game-high 27 points to go along with 10 rebounds while Prewitt dropped 25 points and corralled nine boards.

The Blues had a handful of chances late in the game to turn the tides but just couldn't find the bottom of the net. Whitman trailed by five points late before Lily Gustafson's three pointer with just over three minutes to play cut the lead to two points, then later a pair Burdett free throws shaved the lead to one. That would be as close as the Blues would get though as UPS held on for the win.

The first quarter featured a scrappy opening to the game. UPS found the range early but Mady Burdett and Kaylie McCracken were doing the same. Burdett opened Whitman's scoring with a three pointer then tied the game at 8-8 with another triple. The teams would trade baskets for much of the period before another Burdett three pointer gave the Blues a 19-15 lead with just over two minutes to play. Lange hit from distance shortly after as the two teams finished the quarter tied at 19-19.

The second quarter was no different as the teams battled in what continued to be a tight contest. The Blues would start to heat up though. A Maegen Martin bucket and a steal and fastbreak layup from Stone capped a 10-2 run that put the Blues up 31-24 with 6:45 to play. Undaunted, the Loggers rallied behind the strength of a pair of Mara Henderson three pointers as the Blues carried a three-point lead at the break.

The Blues started the third quarter off with a bang, scoring the period's first eight points before Henderson's three pointer broke the UPS scoring drought 2:18 into the period. The Loggers had a response of their own, reeling off 16 unanswered points capped by a Cassidy Daugherty three pointer. Back-to-back layups from Stone, and a Martin bucket to end the quarter brought the Blues back, but it was UPS that carried a 55-53 lead into the fourth.

The Blues return to the road next weekend, first visiting Willamette on Friday, Jan. 25 for a 6:00 p.m. tip.
