Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Nielsen Nets Gamewinner, Blues Take Down Whitworth In OT

WALLA WALLA, Wash. - Jadon Bachtold scored two first-half goals, Erik Nielsen scored the gamewinner in overtime and the Whitman College men's soccer team remained in the hunt for a Northwest Conference title with a 3-2 victory over Whitworth on Saturday afternoon.

The Blues (8-5, 5-2 NWC) entered the day one of three teams looking up at Pacific Lutheran for the top spot in the conference and notched what will undoubtedly be a much needed win down the road.

Bachtold's first goal came in the 25th minute after the Blues earned a corner kick. After playing a short corner, Oscar Harding served a ball behind the Whitworth defense. Bachtold leaped up and with his head, flicked in the service to the far post to put the Blues up.

Bachtold struck again with his second just before halftime. The Blues earned another corner, this time taken from the right from Jimmy Jacobson. Jacobson served a ball to an unmarked Bachtold who side volleyed a shot into the far post to give his team a two-goal lead.

The momentum switched quickly in the second half when the Pirates scored in the 54th minute. Scott Penner's cross from the right flank found Zanskar Blair who rocketed a shot past Owen Davis-Bower into the far right corner.

Whitworth continued to have the lionshare of the goalscoring chances and earned the equalizer less than 10 minutes later. Eric Shapora was taken down just inside the penalty area to earn his team a penalty kick. Chase Reidt stepped up and took the spot kick, drilling a shot into the upper left corner to tie up the game.

Inside of eight minutes to play, Britton Clifford ripped a shot that bounced off the left post as the two teams headed to overtime.

After a clean first 10, Nielsen scored in the 103rd minute for the gamewinner. Sam Johnson played a short ball forward which Nielsen collected at the top of the box. He turned and fired a shot to the upper right corner as the Whitman bench cleared and the dog pile ensued.

With only one game this weekend, Whitman now turns its attention to next Saturday, Oct. 19 and a home matchup with Pacific (Ore.). Kickoff at the Whitman Athletic Complex is set for 2:30 p.m.
