Game Recap: Women's Volleyball |

Blues Block Party; Women's Volleyball Sweeps Puget Sound

WALLA WALLA, Wash. - Ava McCabe drilled a match-high 11 kills, Christina Boxberger added eight kills and a career-high five blocks and the Whitman College women's volleyball team dominated Puget Sound in every facet of the game en route to a 25-16, 25-22, 25-14 sweep of the Loggers, Friday night in Northwest Conference action at the Sherwood Center.

The Blues (2-13, 2-7 NWC) posted a season-high 18 total blocks. Adding to Boxberger's match-high total, Ruby Matthews posted four blocks, and McCabe and Sophia Dominitz added three each. Whitman hit at a solid .210 clip and forced a team to hit negative (-.071) for the first time this season.

Melanie Siacotos led the Loggers (11-10, 6-3 NWC) with eight kills and Jordan Holman added a team-best 12 digs.

Whitman was dominant for much of the opening set. A 10-3 run to open the match provided enough cushion to get to 25 before the opposition. McCabe, Domintz and Matthews all got in on blocks for the strong early start. The Loggers worked themselves back into the set but never posed a serious threat. They would never close the gap any closer than six points as the Blues closed the set on a 5-1 run with Boxberger notching the set-winning kill.

Set two saw another strong start by the Blues but this time it was a fight to the finish. A Boxberger kill gave the Blues a 12-8 lead. Alyssa Wright's kill made it a one point game but the resilient Blues would never relinquish their early lead. Whitman pushed the lead up to five points but a late rally from the Loggers evened the match at 20-20. Boxberger responded, getting a much-needed kill to put her team back in front, then capped the set with a block to nail down the win.

The Blues led by two sets for the first time this season and made sure of their first sweep. Back-to-back kills from McCabe give the Blues a 10-6 lead then Elyse Benavides caught fire, drilling a pair of kills to go along with a block and Whitman took control up 16-8.

Whitman concludes its weekend activities with a match on Saturday, Oct. 19 versus Pacific Lutheran. First serve at the Sherwood Center is set for 6:00 p.m.
