Women's Volleyball Falls In Four Sets At Linfield

McMINNVILLE, Ore. - In seeking its first win, the Whitman College women's volleyball team nearly pushed Linfield to a fifth set but the result was another loss, a four-set defeat to the Wildcats in Northwest Conference action on Friday night. Set scores were 25-15, 18-25, 25-16, 28-26.

Several Blues (0-11, 0-5 NWC) posted career and match-high performances in the loss. Taylor Knight hit at a .231 clip while drilling a career-high 14 kills. Brooke Valentine posted 25 digs, also a career-best. Emma Anderson delivered a solid overall match with five kills, 11 digs and 24 assists.

Lori Cimmiyotti posted 14 kills for the Wildcats (5-12, 1-4 NWC) to share match-high honors with Knight. Maya Nakasone added a team-best 18 digs.

The match began poorly for the Blues who dropped six of the set's first seven points. Whitman worked its way back into the set but an 8-1 run pushed the lead to 15-7.

Whitman rallied with a dominant win in set two. Back-to-back aces from Ruby Valentine give her team an early 5-3 lead. Later, a 7-1 run capped by Christina Boxberger getting in on a block with Sophia Dominitz to lift the lead to 14-7. An Ava McCabe kill punctuated a four-point burst later in the set to put the Blues up 20-10.

Whitman dropped set three but nearly pulled out a victory in a wild fourth set. Neither team held more than a two-point lead until an Elyse Benavides kill put the Blues up 20-17. The Wildcats didn't let the set slip away but Whitman continued to lead as Megan Suka's kill made it a 22-20 score. Linfield then scored four straight points and looked to have the match at hand. The Blues staved off two match points and evened the set at 24-24 off a Knight kill. Back-to-back kills from Regan Dean keyed Linfield down the stretch though who ended up winning the set and match.

Whitman retakes the court on Saturday, Oct. 4 at Willamette in search of that elusive first win. First serve with the Bearcats is set for 6:00 p.m.
