No. 20 Men's Basketball Cruises Past Sul Ross At Schumann Classic

FOREST GROVE, Ore. - Darne Duckett led all scorers with 22 points, Trevor Osborne added 20 more and the No. 20 Whitman College men's basketball team set the tone early in a 94-78 rout of Sul Ross State in the Ken Schumann Classic on Friday night.

The Blues (3-1) had the stroke collectively, hitting 52% from the field and, aided by Osborne matching his career high of six three pointers, shot 10-25 (40%) from beyond the arc. Nikola Trifunovic and Bryce Mulder both scored career highs of 14 and 10 points respectively as six players scored in double figures for the Blues.

Tristen Licon led the Lobos with 18 points and eight rebounds and Conner Dawson handed out a game-high six assists.

Osborne was hot early, nailing back-to-back three pointers to spearhead Whitman's hot start. Duckett, who added five boards and five dimes, hit on a three then scored on a layup and the Blues led 13-0 less that five minutes into the game. Dawson's bucket for Sul Ross finally put his team on the board but Mulder got it going, hitting a pair of buckets in the paint to keep the deficit at 13 points.

The Lobos navigated their way back into the game however as Licon's and-one three-point play capped an 8-0 run to shave the Whitman lead to 34-24 with 5:40 to play. Coach Bridgeland called for time after the lead was whittled  to six points which seemed to prove dividends. Whitman returned to the floor and regained the momentum seen in the game's opening minutes. A Trifunovic three pointer and a Mulder two-handed flush highlighted a 12-0 run and the Blues headed to half time up 50-33.

An Andrew Vickers basket pushed the lead to 21 points early in the second half, but again the Lobos stemmed the tide to remain in striking distance. Robert Colton scored to put Whitman up 19 points, but Sul Ross responded with an 8-0 run. Later, Logan Dixon scored in the paint to shave the lead to 10 points with 10:54 to play.

The Lobos got no closer as the Blues made sure of the victory inside of the final 10 minutes. Duckett followed up his missed three pointer with a steal in the backcourt, then scored on a driving layup and got fouled in the process. Duckett hit his free throw and the Blues were off and running and cruised to the win.

Whitman concludes the Classic Saturday with a 4:00 p.m. matchup against Concordia-Texas.
