Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Vickers, Duckett Equal Career Highs, Blues Top Concordia (TX)

FOREST GROVE, Ore. - In a game that saw the Blues trail more than they led, Andrew Vickers and Darne Duckett matched their career scoring highs to lead the No. 20 Whitman College men's basketball team to a big second half and a 101-88 rout of Concordia (TX) on Saturday night at the Schumann Classic.

Vickers poured in a game-high 32 points, equaling his career high set in last season's NWC Championship game vs. Whitworth. Duckett matched his career high of 25 points for the second time this season, many coming off a spectacular shooting night from the free throw line (16-18).

Whitman (4-1) forced Concordia into 25 turnovers, turning them into baskets to the tune of 32 points off turnovers. Robert Colton added 12 points and, along with Duckett, a game-high seven rebounds and Nikola Trifunovic scored 12 points off the bench, all from three pointers.

Antoine Henderson led Concordia with 19 points and five rebounds.

The Tornadoes led nearly the entire first half. After Duckett's three pointer to put the Blues up 5-2, Concordia went on a 9-1 run ended with a Michael Gutierrez three pointer with 16:24 to play. Philip Michael's jumper gave the Tornadoes a 16-9 lead but Vickers responded with a three pointer, then Colton scored in the paint to shave the deficit to 16-14.

Concordia began to heat up however and pushed the lead to as many as 12 points. Highlighted by a Melkie three pointer, Concordia went on an 11-1 run to go up 27-15 with 9:27 to play until the break. In true Whitman fashion, the Blues snatched the momentum and whittled their deficit down to two points. Vickers scored as the half came to a close to make it a 48-45 Tornado lead heading to the break.

Concordia continued to lead early in the second half as Henderson completed a three-point play following a Duckett foul to give his team a 54-46 lead. Vickers refused to let the game get away, hitting from distance in back-to-back shots to cut the lead to one point still early in the second half.

The defense then clamped down and the shots consistently fell for Whitman. Gutierrez nailed a three pointer to give the Blues their first lead since the game's early moments and a Colton basket with 10:32 to play extended the lead to 72-66. The floodgates then opened as the Blues uncorked a 13-2 run as Vickers hit from beyond the arc then got to the hoop with a flush and the lead ballooned to 20 points with 3:45 to play.

Whitman is next in action when it travels to Colorado for a pair of non-conference games, first against Johnson & Wales (CO) on Friday, Nov. 29.
