Burdett Goes Off, Stone Scores Late; Blues Take Down Redlands 79-76

REDLANDS, Calif. - Mady Burdett led all scorers with a season-high 26 points, Makana Stone added 21 more including several key baskets down the stretch and the No. 21 Whitman College women's basketball team continued its perfect start to the season with a 79-76 win at Redlands on Saturday night.

Stone scored seven of her season-high 21 points inside the final four minutes of a nail biting finish. Stone scored on a layup to put the Blues up by one point then, after a block on Redlands' ensuing possession, completed an and-one three point play to give Whitman a 75-71 lead with 2:08 remaining. Stone added another bucket on her team's next possession and Burdett sealed the win with a pair of late free throws.

Alyssa Downs provided the offense for Redlands, delivering a game-high 31 points on 7-14 shooting from beyond the arc. Cassandra Lacey added 14 points and five rebounds.

Whitman shot an impressive 47% from the field including 50% in three point attempts aided by Burdett's 7-12 shooting performance from beyond the arc. The Blues dominated the glass to the tune of a 45-25 rebounding advantage with Burdett, Stone and Lily Gustafson all corralling a game-high nine rebounds.

The Blues jumped ahead in the first quarter. Burdett scored four of her triples in the first 10 minutes to keep the Bulldogs at bay. A pair of baskets from Natalie Whitesel also contributed to the hot start as the Blues led 22-17 heading to the second quarter.

The teams went back and forth in the second quarter but the Blues continued to lead as Stone's bucket put Whitman up 31-26 with 4:36 to play. Redlands caught fire right before halftime however and took its first lead on a Downs three pointer with 1:22 remaining. Downs nailed another from distance as the Bulldogs carried to a five-point lead into the break.

Halftime did nothing to slow down Downs who hit a pair of triples right out of the locker room and gave her team a 50-44 lead. Stone and company rallied and took a two-point lead off a Kaelan Shamseldin three pointer with 5:08 to play. Both teams battled evenly the rest of the quarter which ended knotted at 64-64.

The two teams went toe-to-toe in the final 10 minutes with neither able to gain any separation. Stone's and-one three point play broke the tie but Downs came right down and nailed a three pointer. It was the Stone show down the stretch though as the Blues outlasted Redlands for the three-point win.

Whitman's Southern California road swing concludes on Monday, Nov. 25 at Whittier. Tip time is set for 7:00 p.m.
