Blues Close Season With Straight Set Loss At George Fox

NEWBERG, Ore. - Megan Suka posted five blocks, Elyse Benavides added 10 kills but it came in a season finale loss, a straight set defeat at George Fox on Saturday night. Set scores were 25-17, 25-19, 25-19.

Paige O'Rear had 17 kills and 12 digs for George Fox (13-12, 10-6 NWC) with Sophia Lawrence adding a match-high 14 digs.

The opening set began auspiciously for the Blues (3-19, 3-13 NWC) when Christina Boxberger followed up a kill with an ace to give her team a 7-6 lead. Whitman continued to hang around until a pair of O'Rear kills spearheaded a four-point burst to put the Bruins up 14-9. Later, Ashtyn Butler and Aryah Zeller both got in on blocks to push the lead to 20-13.

The Bruins seemingly put the match to bed with a strong start to the second set. George Fox scored the set's first four points then later ran off seven straight to take a 13-3 lead. The Bruins kept their distance, never letting the lead slip below seven points en route to taking a two-set lead.

A 7-0 midset run told the story of set three. A Sophia Dominitz block cut the Bruin lead to 7-6, but O'Rear all but put the match away with back-to-back kills to go along with a block as part of her team's big run.

With no seniors on this season's squad, Whitman now looks toward 2020 and the continued growth of a young team.
