No. 15 Women's Basketball Too Much For Buena Vista

WALLA WALLA, Wash. - Mady Burdett led a well-balanced Blues effort, scoring a team-high 12 points to pace the No. 15 Whitman College women's basketball team to a dominant 72-49 win over Buena Vista University on Day 2 of the Kim Evanger Raney Memorial Classic.

Kaylie McCracken had another fine performance for the Blues (8-1) who finished the Classic at 2-0. She recorded her second straight double double with 11 points and a game-high 11 rebounds. Natalie Whitesel added 10 points and four steals with Kaelan Shamseldin and Makana Stone both scoring eight points.

Erin Gerke led the BVU effort with 18 points, seven rebounds and three steals and Destiny Einerwold added 13 points and five boards.

The Sherwood faithful was treated to a tight contest in the first half. Gerke's jumper gave BVU a 7-4 lead with 5:22 to play in the opening quarter but later, Whitman scored on three straight positions to take a 12-10 lead and headed to the second up by the same margin.

Whitman opened up a nine-point lead by the midway point of the second quarter but the Beavers rallied and cut the lead to two points on a 7-0 run capped by an Einerwold layup. Whitesel regained the momentum for the Blues heading to halftime, nailing a straightaway three pointer at the buzzer to give her team a 31-26 halftime lead.

The Blues clamped down on defense to start the second half. Pressure defense led to BVU turnovers and easy buckets in transition as Whitman opened up a 40-28 lead with 4:58 to play in the period. Shamseldin's three pointer put Whitman up by 14 then, later, Whitesel and Macy Hampton scored on layups and the Blues led 57-40 at the end of the third quarter.

Whitworth topped Maine-Fort Kent 83-65 in the opening game of the evening. The tournament concludes Sunday with Whitworth taking on BVU at 2:00 p.m.

The Blues are back in action after the new year when they open Northwest Conference play hosting the University of Puget Sound on Jan. 3.
