Baseball Opens NWC Round Robin With 12-inning Win Over Lewis & Clark

MCMINNVILLE, Ore.Jerick Nomura had two hits and an RBI, Milo Mincin tossed four innings of scoreless relief for the win and the Whitman College baseball team opened the NWC Round Robin with a thrilling 3-2 win in 12 innings over Lewis & Clark, Saturday at Roy Helser Field.
 
Seven Blues (2-3) players posted hits including Leo Rivera, whose single through the right side of the infield drove home Brett Williams for the walkoff win in the bottom of the 12th inning. Williams put himself in scoring position after reaching base on a hit-by-pitch then stealing second with no outs. Three batters later, Williams strided home on Rivera's RBI hit.
 
Mat Donovan had a hit and a run scored to lead the Pio effort.
 
Mincin (1-1) was near flawless in his four innings of late relief. Entering the game to start the ninth inning, he retired all but one hitter in his four complete innings while striking out four Lewis & Clark batters. His lone baserunner reached on a fielding error
 
Blues starter Eric Ma worked a strong five and one-third innings allowing two runs on three hits and posting six strikeouts. Aus Conniff (0-1) was the pitcher of record for the Pios, tossing three and one third innings of relief and giving up the game-winning run in the 12th.
 
Lewis & Clark's two fifth-inning runs accounted for all the scoring between both teams until the eighth inning when the Blues put two across the plate to even the game. Kyle Reisman's double proved to be the big hit of inning which put runners on second and third with one out. Lucas Thrun tagged up and scored on a David Johnson sacrifice fly then Kepa Supnet, who advanced to third on the play, scored on an infield single from Nomura to even the game.
 
The Blues face Linfield in game two of the round robin.
