Blues Edged By Puget Sound To Close NWC Round Robin

FOREST GROVE, Ore. - Lucas Thrun had a stellar day at the plate with three hits, one run and an RBI but it wasn't enough as the Whitman College baseball team closed the NWC Round Robin with a 5-3 loss to Puget Sound on Sunday at Chuck Bafaro Field.

Brett Williams and David Johnson also delivered multi-hit performances for the Blues (3-5). Both had two hits with Williams scoring a run and Johnson adding a run and an RBI to help their team to a 3-0 lead through four innings.

Jake Larson (0-1) had a rough outing on the mound for Whitman, pitching into the sixth inning but getting lifted for Charlie Carmichael after putting the first three hitters on base. He finished with a final line of five innings pitched allowing five runs on 12 hits with five strikeouts. Carmichael would give up the two-RBI single from Clayton Wait in the sixth inning but was near flawless the rest of the way.

The Blues had a chance to even matters in the ninth inning. Alex Behrman singled to open the inning which was followed by a bunt single from Williams. Jake Nomura successfully advanced Matthew Cho, who had been insterted as a pinchrunner for Behrman, to third and Williams to second. Thrun was intentionally walked to load the bases with one out but the rally would come up empty after a strikeout and a game-ending force out at second.

The top of the UPS (1-5) order did the damage at the plate for the Loggers. Connor Dunn, Jack Gries and Hunter Riley all posted a pair hits and scored a run with Riley adding a pair of RBI. Mason Quinla added a pair of hits as well including his game-tying RBI double in the fifth inning.

Starter Makoa Mau (1-1) allowed three runs on seven hits in five innings for the win with Nate Kloempk notching the save.

The Blues return to action on Saturday, Feb. 23 for their Northwest Conference opener at Linfield. The teams kick off a three game series beginning with Saturday's noon doubleheader.
