Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Women's Basketball Falls To George Fox In NWC Final

NEWBERG, Ore. - The Whitman College women's basketball team scratched and clawed and rode the back of its lone senior Maegen Martin and her season-high 28 points, but it was not to be. Playing in the Lion's den, the Blues lost to George Fox 66-52 in the Northwest Conference Tournament championship on Saturday at Wheeler Sports Center.

Martin shined in what was her last regular season game for the Blues. She shot 11-18 from the field and the 28 points on the stat sheet was a Whitman team season high. Makana Stone put up a double double with 10 points and 13 rebounds to help her team's cause.

The Blues (20-7), who began the day unranked, will see what the NCAA has in store for them when the NCAA Tournament field is revealed on Monday.

Fox saw contributions from a handful of players led by Emily Holder's 13 points. Madison Hull (12 pts) and Tavin Headings (7 pts, 6 reb) keyed the Bruins (24-3) off the bench.

The title game proved to be a scrappy one, but also one the Blues rarely were in. Whitman went cold in the final three-plus minutes of the first quarter, scoring just once to find itself trailing 16-10.

The cold spell continued into the second quarter, ending only on Martin's layup just over three minutes into the period. Meanwhile, George Fox had opened up a double digit lead headlined by a Haylee Hutzler three pointer. Holder's three pointer later extended the advantage to 33-15 and Whitman went to the locker room trailing by 17 points.

The Blues began to make a push late in the third quarter, cutting what was once a 21-point Bruin lead down to 11 at 51-40 on a Lily Gustafson layup.

With neither team able to muster much offense in the final quarter, Fox kept its distance and cruised to the tourney title.

Monday's NCAA Tournament selection show is set for 2:30 p.m. ET (11:30 a.m. PT).
