Women's Lacrosse Cruises Past JWU In Season Opener

SALEM, Ore. - Amidst adversity and the shifting of its "home" game to a neutral site, the Whitman College women's lacrosse team came out smelling like roses, dominating Johnson & Wales (Colo.) 23-1 in the team's season opener on Tuesday afternoon at Sparks Field.

With snow covering the Whitman Athletic Fields, Whitman's home opener was moved to Willamette University but it didn't deter an offensive explosion to start the season. Nina Moore and Sage Ali both scored four goals and posted a pair of assists with another four goals coming from the stick of Hannah Miller. Moore also scooped up three groundballs and had two caused turnovers.

Piper Spencer started in goal and played the first half for the Blues (1-0) with Anna Cadigan subbing in and playing the final 30 minutes. Brigid McCollam and Trent Flanagran split time in between the Pipes for the Wildcats (0-2).

Whitman quickly got out in front with six goals in the first 7:17 of the game. Six different players netted goals in the early scoring spree followed by Ali and Ellie Teare who scored their second goals to push the lead to 8-0 with 14:14 remaining in the first half.

Whitman would find the net four more times before the break for a 12-0 halftime lead.

JWU would score its lone goal early in the second half, an unassisted one from Ashley Guerrero for her second of the season.

With their season opener in the rearview mirror, the Blues will look to get their first action on the Whitman Athletic Fields when host Wartburg College on Thursday, March 7 at 7:00 p.m.
