TUCSON, Ariz. - All streaks must come to an end, fortunately for the Whitman College baseball team this was an inauspicious one.
David Johnson delivered two hits and two runs,
Tristan Kalnins tossed four and one-third innings of relief for win and the Blues ended an 11-game season-opening losing streak with a 5-4 win over UT Dallas on Friday at the Cactus Classic.
The Blues (1-0) never trailed and used what proved to be a needed big seventh inning to pace to the win. Whitman took advantage of three UT Dallas (0-1) errors and RBI hits from Alex Behrman (2 H, 1 R, 1 RBI) and Matthew Sox (1 H, 1 RBI) to put three on the board and take a 5-2 lead.
Craig Thomas had a monster game for the Comets, hitting 4-5 with three runs and one RBI. Ryan Burciaga added two hits and one run scored.
Kalnins (1-0), pitching in relief of Blues starter Travis Craven, surrendered two runs in the bottom of the seventh but allowed just one hit over the final two innings to secure the win. He tossed four and one-third innings and allowed one earned run on four hits with four strikeouts. Craven started and pitched four and two thirds innings, giving up two runs while striking out three Comet batters.
Adam Cook (0-1) was the pitcher of record for UT Dallas, pitching in relief of starter Blake Bihm and giving up one earned run. Bihm pitched into the sixth inning before being spelled by Cook, officially throwing five innings and allowed two runs and recording five strikeouts.
The Blues got on the board first with a pair of runs in the second inning. Johnson delivered a run-scoring double before scoring off a Jake Wisehart single to cap the scoring.
UT Dallas would even the game with a run each in the second and fourth innings, then nearly came all the way back with two runs in the bottom of the seventh. The Blues, on the strength of Kalnins' arm, held on for the win.
Whitman closes the day against Cal Lutheran, a game which is already underway.
