Whitman Swept In Twinbill at CMS

CLAREMONT, Calif. - On Day 2 of the California Classic, the Whitman College baseball team visited Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, suffering a doubleheader sweep to the Stags on Sunday at Bill Arce Field to drop to 8-9 on the season.

Game 1
Tyler Craven went the distance in the opener, giving up just one earned run in eight complete innings of work but it would come in vain as the Blues fell to CMS 3-1.

The Blues, who saw their win streak snapped at three games, showed life in the ninth inning with action on the basepaths. After Kyle Nakamura grounded out to shortstop to lead off the inning, Matthew Sox delivered a base hit and the Blues had a runner on with only one out. The game would end in an instant though as Danny Porras, inserted in the eighth inning for CMS, forced David Johnson into an inning and game ending double play.

Despite very little happening offensively for the Blues, they had a real shot in the eighth inning at erasing the CMS's 3-0 lead. With runners on first and second, Lucas Thrun delivered a base hit but was unable to drive home Alex Behrman who would get caught in a run down. Thrun and Jerick Nomura would advance a base on the play, putting a pair of runners in scoring position for Whitman. Reisman would be unable to deliver what could have been a game-tying hit, instead grounding out to second to end the inning.

The top of the Whitman lineup had a solid afternoon at the plate. Behrman, Thrun and Sox all batted 2-4 with Thrun adding a a double. Nomura had a hit and scored a run batting in a clean up roll.

Craven (1-2) had a strong outing in dropping his first decision. Allowing just the one earned run in the complete game outing, he gave up seven hits and posted five strikeouts.

Calvin Koo (1 H, 1 R, 1 RBI) and Henri Levenson (2-4) provided the offense for CMS with Justin Hull (3-1) working six and two-thirds for the win.

Game 2
The second game of the twinbill saw the Stags ride the arm of middle reliever Josh Cordova (1-1) for a 2-1 win.

Cordova tossed five-plus innings of scoreless relief of starter Brandon Mitchell, allowing just one run which came after he was lifted in the eighth inning.

The one eighth-inning run was all the Blues could muster, giving very little run support to starter Charlie Carmichael (0-2) and relievers Collin Anderson and Tristan Kalnins. Carmichael tossed three complete innings, allowing CMS's only two runs of the game. Novograda doubled home Motter in the first inning with Shore also driving home a run on a double one inning later.

Anderson didn't have his best stuff after entering the game to start the third inning. After giving up a base hit, hitting two batters and issuing a walk, Kalnins came on to record the final two outs and get the Blues through the inning unscathed. Kalnins tossed a scoreless four and two-thirds to put the Blues in a position to split the doubleheader but the Whitman hitters couldn't come through.

Whitman squandered a scoring opportunity in the seventh inning but couldn't take advantage of a Nakamura lead-off double. One inning later, the Blues had a chance to put more on the board than just the one run. Reisman was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, but after Brett Williams trotted home to cut the lead to 2-1, Nakamura struck out and Jake Wishart flied out to end the threat.

The Blues conclude the trip and the California Classic on Monday, visiting Occidental College for a single game beginning at 11:00 a.m.
