Baseball Swept By Pacific In NWC Doubleheader

FOREST GROVE, Ore. - Looking to make some headway in the Northwest Conference standings, the Whitman College baseball team fell short on Saturday, dropping both games of a doubleheader at Pacific (Ore.). Whitman (9-11, 4-4 NWC) lost 5-1 in the opener then fell victim to a walkoff homerun in an 8-7 game two loss.

Game 1
The opener featured a pitcher's duel most of the way before the Boxers (14-6, 8-3 NWC) unleashed four runs in the eighth inning to eventually cruise to the 5-1 win.

Whitman's bats had largely been held in check as the Blues had been unable to cross any runners over home plate through six innings. Matters changed in the seventh with a leadoff triple from Kevin Nakamura (2 H, 1 R). Two batters later, David Johnson's (1 H, 1 RBI) chopper to second scored Nakamura and tied the game at 1-1.

Pacific went quietly in the bottom half of the seventh but exploded with four eighth-inning runs. Travis Craven (1-3), who had delivered a solid outing to that point, gave up a leadoff double to Igawa and later an RBI triple to Chase Anderson. He was lifted for Tristan Kalnins with one out and the Blues trailing 3-1. Craven's book closed with four runs on seven hits with four strikeouts in seven and one-third innings of work.

Casey Brown got the better of Craven on the mound for the Boxers. Improving his record to 4-0, he tossed a complete game allowing the one run on five hits with five strikeouts. Anderson (2 H, 2 R, 1 RBI) and Dustin Meyer (2 H, 1 R, 2 RBI) provided the offense for Pacific.

Game 2
The second half of the twinbill saw more scoring from the Blues but still with the same result. This time the loss came in dramatic fashion as Ryan Krout took a Kalnins (1-1) pitch into the stands for a walkoff homerun in the ninth.

A handful of Whitman players had outstanding performances at the plate led by Jake Wishart's four-hit, two-run showing. Matthew Sox and Kyle Reisman both had three hits and scored a run with Sox driving home a run and Reisman adding two RBI of his own. Lucas Thrun added two hits, one run and one RBI.

Both teams went to their bullpens early. Eric Ma was lifted for the Blues after pitching to four hitters in the fifth inning, but not before giving up a pair of homeruns in the process. Krout hit the first of his two homers in the third inning to put GFU up 4-3, then Meyer went yard in the fifth to again rally the Bruins and tie up the game at 6-6.

Whitman jumped on the Bruins early. Reisman opened the scoring with a run-scoring double to help the Blues to a 2-0 lead after one inning. Whitman added another in the second when Sox drove home Wishart who had singled to open the inning.

The Blues added two more in the fifth to break a 4-4 tie but the longball again served the Bruins well who tied up the game on Meyer's homerun. Trailing by one run in the eighth, Whitman tied up the game when Thrun drew a bases loaded walk, but an inning and a half later Krout delivered his walk off blast.

Whitman and Pacific close out their series on Sunday with a single game set for a 12:00 p.m. first pitch.
