Baseball Falls To Pacific In Series Finale, 2-1

FOREST GROVE, Ore. - The series finale between the Blues and Boxers featured more than its fair share of late game heroics, but not in the least to Whitman's liking. On the heels of a game-tying homerun in the ninth and a walkoff homer in the 10th, the Whitman College baseball team fell 2-1 in extra innings to Pacific (Ore.) in Northwest Conference action Sunday at Chuck Bafaro Stadium.

The loss gives the Boxers (15-6, 9-3 NWC) the series sweep and drops the Blues to 4-5 in conference and 9-12 overall.

Matthew Sox started and worked nine complete innings but did not factor in the decision. After giving up the game-tying homer in the ninth to Ryan Krout, Sox was able to retire two of the next three Boxer hitters to get through the rest of the inning unscathed. He would not return for the 10th inning and finish with a final line of one run on six hits with eight strikeouts.

Sox had an opportunity to nail down the win in the ninth. The teams played to a stalemate through eight innings but Tyler Lewis (1 H, 1 R, 1 RBI) changed that with one swing of the bat. Lewis took Boxer starter Sam Lawrence yard for the game's first run and a 1-0 Whitman lead. Like Sox, Lawrence would make it through the ninth but not make it back out in the 10th. Derek Ridgeway (1-0) retired the Whitman side in the lone extra frame and put himself in a position to be the pitcher of record for the Boxers.

Milo Mincin (1-2) took the bump for the Blues in the 10th but would end up taking the loss after Hayden Wright took him deep for the walk off win.

Whitman will look to right the ship next weekend when the Blues open up a three-game NWC set against Willamette. First pitch of Saturday's doubleheader is set for 12:00 p.m.
