CLAREMONT, Calif. - Continuing with one of the most challenging non-conference schedules in the nation, the No. 16 Whitman College men's tennis team took on third-ranked Bowdoin College but came up short in a 7-2 loss to the Bears on Tuesday.

Alex Hwang notched both wins for the Blues. He and doubles partner Andreas Mueller-Immergluck salvaged a point in doubles play with an 8-6 win on the No. 1 court over Bowdoin's Grant Urken and Jerry Jiang.

With the Blues (5-8) trailing 2-1 after doubles play, Hwang's play at fourth singles forced Justin Wang to withdraw in the second set thereby tying up the score.

It would be all Bowdoin (6-1) from then on. Adam Rapoport and Dan Foster fell in straight sets on the No. 3 and No. 2 courts as the Bears moved to within one point of the match. The clincher came at first singles where Ben Kirsh pushed his match to a third set but ultimately lost to Urken 6-1, 4-6, 6-2.

The final result of the day saw Mueller-Immergluck win his opening set on the No. 5 court but lose the next two in a 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 loss to Justin Patel.

Now at the midpoint of their trip to the Golden State, the Blues head a bit east and a visit to Redlands University. Whitman and Redlands face off this Friday, March 22 at 3:00 p.m.
