Blues Top George Fox For Second Straight Series Win

NEWBERG, Ore. - Jake Wishart homered in the second inning, Kevin Nakamura did the same in the ninth and the Whitman College baseball team won its second straight series with a 5-2 win over George Fox, Sunday in Northwest Conference action at Morse Athletic Field.

Matthew Sox (4-1) delivered a career-high 10 strikeouts in a strong six and one-third innings for the win. Milo Mincin worked a scoreless two and two-thirds innings of scoreless relief to preserve the win for the Blues (13-14, 8-7 NWC). Bruin starter Chase Fetzer (2-2) was tagged with the loss allowing three earned runs in two innings of work.

Lucas Thrun had quite a day at the plate, batting 3-4 while driving home a run and scoring another. Sox helped his own cause with one hit and one RBI with Tyler Lewis adding one hit and one run.

The Blues jumped on the Bruins early, taking a 4-0 lead through three innings. Wishart's two-run shot opened the scoring and, one inning later, Lewis scored on a Sox sacrifice fly. Thrun then drove home Brett Williams to give Whitman the four-run lead.

George Fox chipped away with one run each in the fourth and fifth innings. Matt Ramirez (2 H, 1 RBI) doubled home a run in the fifth to shave the lead to two runs.

That would be all the scoring for the Bruins as Mincin navigated through the George Fox order through his two-plus innings of scoreless relief. Nakamura's solo homer in the ninth gave the Blues some added insurance.

Whitman returns home and will open up a three-game Northwest Conference set with Pacific Lutheran on Saturday, Apr. 6. First pitch of the doubleheader is set for 12:00 p.m.
