Baseball Tops UPS, Completes First Series Sweep

TACOMA, Wash. - Brett Williams delivered a monster performance with four hits, two runs and two RBI, Lucas Thrun added two hits and three RBI and the Whitman College baseball team completed its first Northwest Conference series sweep with a 12-6 win at Puget Sound on Sunday at Logger Field.

The Blues (18-15, 13-8 NWC), bolstered by a six-run seventh inning, moved closer to clinching a spot in the NWC Tournament set to take place later this month. Tristan Kalnins (3-1) was the pitcher of record for Whitman out of bullpen with Milo Mincin earning his eighth save in two innings of work.

Kyle Strash led the Loggers (9-24, 8-13 NWC) batting 3-5 with two runs and one RBI. Starter Mic Warnick allowed one earned run in six innings but did not factor in the decision. Reliever Nate Kloempken (0-1) was tagged with the loss.

The Blues took an early 3-0 lead after RBI hits in the second inning from both Cole Edwards and Williams. Matthew Sox cruised through the first five innings in the mound but ran into trouble in the sixth. He gave up three doubles in the inning, the last from Connor Dunn which drove home two runs to put the Loggers up 4-3. Sox made it through the inning but would be lifted for Kalnins to start the seventh.

UPS's momentum was short-lived as the Blues put six on the board one-half inning later. Kloempken started the inning but was never able to retire a hitter and was lifted after issuing a bases loaded walk to Thrun to tie the game.

Whitman then blew the game open. David Johnson and Kevin Nakamura both ripped two-RBI doubles with Nakamura capping the scoring when he scampered home off a UPS miscue to put the lead at 9-4. The Blues added three more for good measure in the ninth.

The Blues now return home for its final league series and a chance to nail down a spot in the postseason. Whitman opens up a three-game series vs. Lewis & Clark with a doubleheader this Friday, Apr. 19. First pitch is slated for 12:00 p.m.
