Baseball Takes Down Host Whitworth, Moves Within One Win of NWC Title

SPOKANE, Wash. - The Whitman College baseball team has already made program history and is now one game away from making more. The Blues took down host Whitworth 5-3 on Saturday to move within one win of a Northwest Conference Tournament title and an automatic birth to the NCAA Tournament.

With the tournament played in a double elimination format, Whitman remains as the lone unbeaten team and will retake the field Sunday needing to be beaten twice.

Matthew Sox threw a solid six and one-third innings, giving up one earned run on four hits with five strikeouts. Eric Ma (7-1) came on and picked up the win in two and two-thirds innings of relief work. Whitworth starter Austin Rice did not factor in the decision despite striking out 10 Whitman hitters in five and two-thirds scoreless innings.

The win was not without its anxious moments though. Whitman carried a four-run lead into the bottom of the ninth, but after Cody Simmons' (2 H, 1 R, 2 RBI) two-run homer the Bucs had sliced the lead in half. Whitman coach Brian Kitamura stuck with Ma who collected himself to strike out Casey Isa for the second out. After Ma walked the next hitter to bring the potential tying run to the plate, he forced a line out to David Johnson at third to end the game.

Brett Williams and Kyle Reisman both had stellar days at the plate, each posting three hits with Williams driving home a pair of runs which proved to be the difference in the game. Reisman's RBI was the result of his game-tying double in the seventh as the Blues had been held in check to that point by Rice.

The Blues scored all their runs in the seventh, eighth and ninth innings, four charged to reliever Mathew Pulliam (1-1) who was tagged with the loss. Tyler Lewis (2 H, 2 R, 1 RBI) scored and doubled home a run as the Blues built a 5-1 lead.

The Blues will look to win the tourney title when they take the field Sunday at 12:00 p.m.
