Men’s Tennis Battles In Doubles, Cruises In Singles To Win NWC Title

4/28/2019 6:33:00 PM

WALLA WALLA, Wash. - The Whitman College men's tennis team rallied in doubles on the No. 1 and No. 2 courts, then dominated early in singles to top George Fox 6-0 and claim its 13th straight Northwest Conference Tournament title, Sunday at the Whitman Outdoor Tennis Courts.

Whitman took a 3-0 lead after doubles play but saw stiff competition from the Bruins in doing so. The Whitman pair of Rajul Chikkalingaiah and Adam Rapoport won solidly but the Blues had to gut wins at the one and two. At the two, Ben Kirsh and Daniel Foster trailed 7-6 but rallied to force a tiebreaker which they easily won 7-1.

With the Blues (12-10) up two games, it was up to Alex Hwang and Andreas Mueller-Immergluck to grab a firm hold on the match and did so with a rally of their own, beating Fox's Will Leach and Keaton Baker 8-7 (7-5).

Singles play saw Rapoport put the Blues on the brink of the title with his 6-3, 6-2 win over Baker on the No. 3 court. Whitman clinched the match almost simultaneously on two courts as it was Hwang claiming a 6-3, 6-1 win over Alex Namba just seconds before Mueller-Immergluck took down Payton Namba 6-4, 6-0 at the four.

With the NWC Tournament a week ahead of much of the nation, the Blues, now with the league's automatic qualifier, will wait a week to find out where they will open NCAA Tournament play.
