Tyler Lewis Crushes First Grand Slam, Blues Cruise Past PLU

WALLA WALLA, Wash. - Tyler Lewis crushed a late-inning grand slam and Matthew Sox equaled his career high of 10 strikeouts in seven and a third innings of work to pace the Whitman College baseball team to its third straight series win with an 11-3 victory over Pacific Lutheran in Northwest Conference action Saturday at Borleske Stadium.

Despite Sox's strong outing that improved his record to 5-0, he was a bit shaky at the start. He hit a pair of batters and gave up an RBI triple over the first two innings as PLU (18-12, 10-8 NWC) took a 2-0 lead through its half of the third inning. Sox would settle down and the Whitman (15-15, 10-8 NWC) bats would come alive, most notably from Lewis' (2-3, 3 R, 4 RBI) first-ever grand slam in the seventh to put the game away.

Alex Behrman had two hits, scored a run and knocked in two more with Cole Edwards adding two hits and three runs. Sox helped his own cause with two hits, one run and one RBI.

Austin Gormley and Marques Carlson both recorded two hits for the Lutes with Gormley scoring a run and Carlson adding an RBI. PLU starter Tommy Snyder (2-3) suffered the loss, allowing four earned runs in four and one-third innings of work.

Snyder held the Blues in check for the first two innings, but an Edwards leadoff double in the third opened the door for run-scoring hits from both Brett Williams (1 H, 2 RBI) and Behrman to tie the game at 2-2.

PLU regained the lead with a run in the top of the fifth, but Whitman exploded for nine runs across the fifth, sixth and seventh innings to win going away. RBI hits from Behrman, Sox and Lucas Thrun gave Whitman its first lead through five innings then Lewis all but sealed the win with his grand slam two innings later.

The Blues open up a three-game NWC set next weekend at Puget Sound. First pitch of the Saturday, Apr. 13 doubleheader is set for 12:00 p.m.
