Baseball Takes Two On Opening Day of NWC Round Robin

TACOMA, Wash. - The Whitman College baseball team, one week after capturing its first Northwest Conference Tournament, opened the NWC Round Robin with a pair of wins, topping host Puget Sound 12-3 then beating Pacific Lutheran 5-4 in the nightcap, Saturday at Logger Field.

Game 1
The opener saw the Blues (25-17) bats come alive early to the tune of six runs over the first two innings. Matthew Sox, who batted 3-5 with two runs and three RBI, keyed the offense over the first two innings with a first-inning run-scoring double then a two-run homer one inning later to help the Blues to a 6-0 lead through two and one-half innings.

Kyle Reisman and Drew Vannaman were also a handful for the Logger pitching staff. Reisman batted 3-4 with two runs and one RBI and Vannaman added three hits and three RBI. Travis Craven (7-5) worked six innings for the win, allowing one run on five hits with seven strikeouts.

Jack Greis posted one hit, one run and one RBI for the Loggers with Shan Hamada (1H, 1 R, 1 RBI) delivering a pinch-hit home run. Tyle Huling (0-6) was tagged with the loss, allowing eight runs in five innings of work.

Game 2
The nightcap saw the Blues trail early but nevertheless rally for the win. Whitman fell behind by three runs after two innings. Jacob Bockelie (1 H, 1 R, 1 RBI) doubled in a run in the first and PLU manufactured another two runs over the rest of the inning and in the second for the early 3-0 lead.

The Blues got back in the game with a pair of runs in the third. Anthony Nevoso (1 H, 1 R), after Kevin Nakamura had walked to open the inning, doubled to put runners on second and third. Nakamura would score on a wild pitch from Justin Ambruester then Nevoso tagged up and scored from third on a Cole Edwards (2 RBI) sacrifice fly to shave the lead to one run.

Whitman came all the way back in the sixth inning on Jake Wishart's (1 H, 1 RBI) RBI triple to tie the game at 3-3. Vannaman (2 H, 1 R) would score in a fielding error one inning later and Tyler Lewis, after doubling in the eighth and agreed upon final inning, scored what proved to be the gamewinner.

Charlie Carmichael earned the win in three innings of relief work, allowing one run on two hits with a pair of strikeouts. Matt Franceschina was tagged with the loss for the Lutes, allowing one run in one and two-thirds innings of relief work.

The Blues return on Sunday for their second and final day of the NWC Round Robin. The Blues face PLU at 9:30 a.m. and Whitworth at 3:30 p.m.
