GREENCASTLE, Ind. -
Taylor Knight posted a team-high 13 kills,
Elyse Benavides and
Ava McCabe both added 12 more but it wasn't enough as the Whitman College women's volleyball team fell in four sets to Alma College, Friday in the DePauw Tigers Invitational held at Neal Fieldhouse. Set scores were 16-25, 26-24, 25-17, 25-22.
The Blues took it to the Scots in the opening set. An early five-point spurt, punctuated by a Christina Boxberger kill, set the tone for the set. Alma cut into the lead off block assists from Sara Majerle and Naomi Mason to bring the scoreline to 10-8, but the Blues responded in kind. A pair of kills each from Knight and McCabe pushed the lead back up to five points, and later a Boxberger kill capped what turned out to be a 12-1 run and just about close the book on the opening set.
A wild set two saw the Scots even up the match. The Blues held a three-point lead midway through the frame, but five straight points made it a 13-11 Scot lead. Later, a Georgia Miller kill put the score at 18-14 as Alma closed in on the win. Whitman then caught fire, going on a 6-1 run on the heels of a pair of Benavides kills to take a 20-19 lead. The Blues took a 24-22 lead with a pair of set points coming, but Majerle delivered back-to-back kills as part of a 4-0 set closing run to tie up the match.
Whitman was unable to dig out of an early 10-point hole in its set three loss. While the Blues would work their way back into the set, the early 12-2 deficit proved to be too much to overcome. Benavides did make it interesting however. A flurry of four straight kills cut the lead to 20-15. A pair of Miller kills though stemmed the tide for the Scots who finished off the Blues to take the lead in the match.
The fourth and final set was tight most of the way with the Blues taking a late lead at 17-16 off a Benavides kill. The Scots then went on an 8-3 run to take control of the set and close out the match.
The Blues close day one with a matchup against host DePauw.
