Women's Soccer Falls To CBC In Home Opener

9/7/2019 5:28:00 PM

WALLA WALLA, Wash. - The Whitman College women's soccer team opened its home slate against Columbia Basin College, but gave up two second-half goals en route to a 2-1 defeat to the Hawks on Saturday.

The Blues (0-3) were unable to gain much momentum, seeing CBC hold the lionshare of the possession and have a majority of the chances on goal. The Hawks outshot Whitman 21-8 but five of Whitman's eight strikes were on target, forcing CBC keeper Riajo Schwartz into four saves.

Both Schwartz and Blues keeper Allie Seracuse played a full 90 minutes, each making four saves.

After a scoreless first half, the Hawks struck first, scoring in the 56th minute on an unassisted goal from Bailey Whitney.

Despite the game belonging to the Hawks to that point, the Blues responded with an equalizer. Pagan Hetherington earned herself a penalty kick after being taken down inside the box. Hetherington took and converted the penalty to tie up the game in the 59th minute.

The game appeared headed to overtime but Dani Chang's goal in the 85th minute proved to be the gamewinner for CBC.

Next up for the Blues is their alumnae game next Sunday, Sept. 15 at 11:30 a.m.
