Women's Basketball Tops Linfield, Burdett Honored

WALLA WALLA, Wash. - Makana Stone scored a game-high 22 points, Mady Burdett added 14 more after being honored prior to game time and the No. 12 Whitman College women's basketball team handled Linfield 82-63 in Northwest Conference action Saturday at the Sherwood Center.

Burdett scored her 1,000th career point this past week at Whitworth and was honored with a special presentation prior to tipoff. Former Whitman player Sunny Gulberg was out on the floor with Burdett for the ceremony.

Kaylie McCracken dropped 16 points off the bench for the Blues (15-2, 7-1 NWC) who outrebounded and outshot the Wildcats. Whitman won the rebound battle 38-27 and shot north of 10% better from the floor.

Molly Danielson led the Wildcats with 16 points and eight rebounds, Delaney Ragan scored 13 off the bench and Kory Oleson added 10 points.

The game opened with an entertaining first quarter of basketball that saw the Blues leave with a 25-20 lead. Whitman scored the game's first eight points, five coming from Burdett who had it going early. Linfield quickly responded as back-to-back Ragan layups helped even the score at 10-10. The teams traded baskets before the Blues ended the quarter on a 6-0 run.

Whitman took control in the second quarter. After Linfield opened with a three-pointer, the Blues reeled off nine straight points highlighted by back-to-back jumpers from Stone and a three-pointer from McCracken. Shaira Young's layup gave her team its largest lead of the half at 15 points and Whitman went into the break up 42-31.

The Blues expanded the lead in the third quarter and cruised to the win. With Linfield keeping the deficit to low double digits, McCracken heated up toward the end of the quarter. She scored three straight baskets, then Caira Young nailed a three pointer to make it a 19-point lead heading into the final 10 minutes.

Whitman now begins its longest road stretch of the conference season. First up is a visit this Friday, Jan. 31 to Pacific Lutheran. Tipoff is set for 6:00 p.m.
