Men's Basketball Earns Road Win At Puget Sound

TACOMA, Wash. - Jaron Kirkley scored a team-high 21 points, Darne Duckett added 18 more and the Whitman College men's basketball team withstood a late rally to take down the University of Puget Sound 90-87 in Northwest Conference action on Saturday night.

The win keeps the Blues (14-4, 10-0 NWC) perfect in league play and atop the conference standings. Robert Colton scored 11 points and grabbed six rebounds with Trevor Osborne putting up 14 points off the bench.

Kirkley added six rebounds to his line, three coming on the offensive end to help Whitman to a plus-10 advantage on the offensive glass. The extra effort on the boards led to 17 second chance points, 11 more than the Loggers (9-10, 3-7 NWC).

Jourdan Joseph led three UPS starters in double figures, scoring a game-high 25 points to go along with five rebounds and two blocks. Cal Hansen added 16 points and 10 boards.

Kirkley was a man on a mission in the game's opening moments. The senior guard got to the hoop twice within the first minute then drained a three pointer to put the Blues up 7-2. The Loggers never let the game get away from them as layups from Hansen and Riley Nichol made it a 28-24 game with 7:53 to play. The Blues pushed the lead to as many as 11 points in the first half. Nikola Trifunovic's layup put the Blues up 35-24 but UPS stemmed the tide and shaved the Whitman lead to four points by halftime.

Both teams were hot to start the second half, and it were the Loggers who whittled the lead down to one point off a Grant Erickson layup. The Blues responded with eight straight points and again the lead was back up to double digits.

Whitman looked prime to pull away as the game approached the midpoint of the second half. A three pointer from Osborne, coupled by baskets from Weston Crump and Brian Warinner, extended the lead to 14 points with 11:10 to play. The Blues then found points tough to come by and were unable to hit from the field for a 5:26 stretch. Whitman continued to lead but UPS cut it down to only three points with 2:42 to play.

Thanks to a pair of hoops from Kirkley and Andrew Vickers, and perfect shooting from the free throw line down the stretch, the Blues held off the Loggers to make it back-to-back wins in Tacoma this weekend.

The Blues head back out on the road again next weekend, first facing Willamette on Friday, Feb. 7 at 8:00 p.m.
