Baseball Opens NWC Play With Sweep of Linfield

WALLA WALLA, Wash. - The Whitman College baseball team opened the Northwest Conference season with a bang, sweeping a doubleheader from Linfield on Saturday at Borleske Stadium.

Game 1

Leo Rivera had a hit, two runs and an RBI, Kevin Nakamura added two hits and two runs as the Blues topped the Wildcats 11-6 in game one.

Travis Craven (1-2) earned the win, giving up three earned runs on seven hits in five innings. Cameron Skinner (0-1) lasted only an inning and a third and allowed five earned runs in four hits.

David Brosius and Wyatt Smith each had two hits for Linfield with Brosius adding a run and Smith posting an RBI.

The Blues (3-6, 2-0 NWC) jumped on the Wildcats (4-5, 0-2 NWC) early with four runs in their first at bats. Rivera provided the early spark with his run-scoring base hit, scoring both Matthew Sox and Drew Vannaman. Nakamura, who had advanced to third on Rivera's hit, scampered home on David Johnson's ground out to third. Jerick Nomura tacked on the fourth run with his run-scoring double to the right centerfield gap.

Whitman took advantage of several miscues to add three more in the second inning. Vannaman reached on a fielding error and advanced to second as the errant throw skipped past Smith at first, also allowing Brett Williams to score from second base. Sox later drove in a run with a base hit and scored on a passed ball.

Craven battled into the the sixth inning but was lifted after loading the bases with no outs. Entering the game in a tough spot, Colin Anderson struck out his first two batters and would surrender just one unearned run after a Whitman fielding error, making it a 9-5 ball game.

Both teams added runs in the later innings but it was the Whitman bullpen that kept the Wildcats at bay. Anderson finished with four strikeouts in three scoreless innings and Tristain Kalnins tossed a perfect ninth to seal the win.

Game 2

The nightcap saw the Blues complete the doubleheader sweep with a walk off wild pitch in the 10th inning. Rivera and Johnson delivered back-to-back singles to open the 10th. Teague Conder then laid down a beautiful bunt along the third base line and legged out the hit to leave the bases with no outs. Matt Cho was delivered a pitch in the dirt that allowed Rivera to dash home for the gamewinner.

Jake Larson (1-1) earned the win in three innings of relief work, allowing one run on two hits with four strikeouts. Colton Robinson (0-1) was tagged with the loss for Linfield.

Jerick Nomura had a stellar game at the plate batting 3-4 with a run scored with Rivera adding two hits and two runs, and Nakamura putting up two hits, a run scored and two RBI.

The nightcap opened with much less firepower, but did see Whitman plate a run in the first and second innings. Ben Raneiri took Eric Ma's first offering over the left field fence, but Sox countered in kind with a solo homer of his own.

After a bit of a shaky first inning, Ma settled in and gave Coach Kitamura a solid outing before being lifted in the sixth inning. Meanwhile the Blues added another run in the fifth as Anthony Nevoso battled back from an 0-2 count and drew a bases loaded walk to put Whitman up 3-1.

Linfield got right back in the game with two runs in the sixth inning. Brian Cromwell doubled in a run then later, Smith scored unearned to tie up the score at 3-3.

Nakamura answered back for the Blues, and in a big way. He took a 1-1 pitch from reliever Andrew Del Biaggio over the left field fence, getting both runs back and putting the Blues back in front 5-3.

Linfield tacked on three runs over the seventh and eighth innings, but the Blues responded to tie the game in the ninth and nearly won it in the same inning. With the bases loaded and one out, Kepa Supnet grounded into an inning-ending double play to end the threat.

Whitman will look for the sweep when the two teams square off in the series finale on Sunday at 2:00 p.m.
