Baseball Drops Series Opener at Whitworth

SPOKANE, Wash. - In a rematch between last year's Northwest Conference championship opponents, the Whitman College baseball team was upended by Whitworth 14-5 in its NWC series opener with the Bucs on Saturday at Merkel Field.

Travis Craven (1-2) got roughed up in his four official innings of work allowing seven earned runs on 12 hits with three strikeouts. He was lifted in the fifth inning for Colin Anderson after giving up four hits and issuing a base on balls to open the inning.

The top of the Whitman order provided the offense. David Johnson posted three hits including a double and a run scored. Teague Conder added two hits and two runs and Matthew Sox doubled and drove in three runs.

All of Whitman's runs came in the second and third innings. Sox delivered a two-out bases clearing double in the second as the Blues struck first with three runs in the inning. Whitworth responded with a run in the bottom of the second, but Whitman expanded the lead one half-inning later. Johnson and Conder singled and doubled to open the inning, then Brett Williams drove home both with a double of his own to put his team up 5-1.

The Bucs found their bats - and in a big way - crushing three homeruns over the next four innings. The first came in the third inning when Liam Fitzpatrick (1 H, 2 R, 2 RBI) took a Craven pitch over the left field fence, and the next two both came in solo fashion in the sixth inning.

Landon Shigeta (1-0) tossed five scoreless innings out of the bullpen for the win.
