Baseball Suffers Doubleheader Sweep At La Verne

LA VERNE, Calif. - The Whitman College baseball team had hoped to come away with a win in its three game set with La Verne, but suffered a double header sweep in falling 4-3 in game one and 7-5 in the nightcap to the Leopards.

Game 1
The opener saw Eric Ma (1-2) throw five complete innings, the last three of the scoreless variety, but the Blues were unable to pull out the win. The first two innings looked promising as the Blues put three on the board led by Anthony Nevoso doubling and scoring a run in the second inning.

The rest of the runs came in the bottom of the third when the Leopards turned a two-run deficit into a one-run lead. Brandon Shiota doubled in the first two runs, then later broke the tie when he was driven home on a base hit from Jacob Benson.

That would be all the scoring for the game. Colin Anderson took over for Ma to start the sixth inning and was lights out, allowing only two baserunners in three scoreless innings to finish the game.

Devan Burhans (2-2) tossed seven complete innings for the win, allowing one earned run on five hits.

Game 2
The Blues jumped on La Verne early and often in the second game of the twinbill. Whitman scored two runs in both the first and second innings and led 5-0 through three innings. A pair of doubles in the first inning, first from Matthew Cho (1 H, 1 R) then from Leo Rivera (2 H, 1 RBI) led to a two-run first, then the Blues played small ball to manufacture a pair of second inning runs.

Whitman would be unable to put any additional runs on the scoreboard however. La Verne rallied late with a pair of run-scoring extra base hits from Tyler Siffert, doing the damage in a three-run seventh inning.

Dexter Aichele had a serviceable outing on the mound but did not factor in the decision. He tossed six complete innings, allowing two runs on three hits with four strikeouts. Tristan Kalnins (0-2) was tagged with the loss in two innings of relief work.

The Blues wrap up the weekend California trip with a Sunday single game matchup at Claremont-Mudd-Scripps. First pitch is set for 10:30 p.m.
