Baseball Falls In Non-Conference Game at CMS

CLAREMONT, Calif. Brett Williams batted 3-4 including a triple and two runs scored, Isaac Beamon added a hit and two RBI but it wasn't enough as the Whitman College baseball team came up short in a 10-5 loss to Claremont-Mudd-Scripps on Sunday at Arce Field.

Matt Sox (1-2) suffered the loss for the Blues (4-13) who had hoped to close out their non-conference weekend road trip with a win. Sox worked five complete innings, allowing seven runs on nine hits with six strikeouts.

Zach Clarke led the Spartans with two hits, two runs and two RBI including a two-run first-inning homerun to put CMS up early. Hull (2-1) allowed all five runs on seven hits in six innings which proved to be good enough for the win.

The Blues struck first on an RBI-single from Sox in the first inning, but Clarke's two-run roundtripper helped his team counter with three runs in the bottom of the first.

CMS added another run in the second but the Blues responded with a big third inning. Williams kickstarted the Whitman offense with a leadoff triple then scored on Jerick Nomura's ground out to shortstop. David Johnson later drove home a run before Beamon drove a pitch through the middle of the infield to score both Johnson and Leo Rivera and give the Blues a 5-4 lead.

The late innings proved to be trouble again as they have in recent outings. CMS scored three runs in the fifth and another three in the seventh to win going away. The combination of Hull and the Spartan bullpen shut down the Whitman bats from the fourth inning on through the ninth.

The Blues look to get back on track with some cooking next weekend. Whitman returns to Northwest Conference action with a three-game set versus Pacific (Ore.). First pitch of Saturday's doubleheader at Borleske Stadium is set for 12:00 p.m.
