Women's Volleyball Falls In Four Sets At Pacific

FOREST GROVE, Ore. - On a night where Kenzie Martinez and Nicole Kelly both led the Whitman College women's volleyball team with a career-high 14 kills, the Blues still came up on the short end of the stick in three-set loss to Pacific (OR) in Northwest Conference action on Friday night. Set scores were 19-25, 25-22, 25-16, 25-21.

Kelly also added 11 digs for a double double and Brooke Valentine posted a match-high 23 digs. Alison Brown led Pacific with a match-high 18 kills and Mara Murphy added 14 kills and 14 digs.

The opening set saw Whitman (4-14, 2-7 NWC) break a 13-13 tie with a 5-0 run to take control. The run featured back-to-back kills from Kelly and a block and a kill from Sydney London. Kelly was unblockable in closing out the set. She drilled three kills for her team's final three points, giving her nine total in the opening frame.

The Boxers grabbed the momentum in the second set and carried an early five-point lead. Brown delivered a pair of kills, the second sparking a quick three-point run that put Pacific out in front 12-7. The Blues responded, scoring five of the next six points capped by a double block from Kelly and London. The teams traded points until a run of four straight points put the Blues ahead 18-16. The Boxers responded in kind, posting runs of three and four points to pull away and even the match.

Pacific never relinquished the momentum in grabbing sets three and four to win the match in four sets. The Boxers ran off six straight points in set three to blow the set wide open and take an 18-9 lead. After closing out the Blues to take a 2-1 set lead, the Boxers broke an 8-8 tie in set four with a 6-1 run. The Blues hung around and shaved the deficit to three points off a Megan Suka kill, but Pacific closed out the set and clinched the win.

Whitman returns to action tomorrow, Oct. 16 for a 6:00 p.m. match at George Fox.
