Women's Volleyball Swept At Whitworth

SPOKANE, Wash. - Kenzie Martinez recorded team highs of seven kills and nine digs but it couldn't stop a Whitworth sweep as the Whitman College women's volleyball team fell in straight sets to the Bucs in Northwest Conference on Wednesday night. Set scores were 25-19, 25-20, 25-9.

Emma Anderson added five kills and 11 assists for the Blues (4-12, 2-5 NWC) who were forced into 23 hitting errors, 10 more than Whitworth. 

Cassidy Franklin recorded a match-high nine kills for the Bucs who remained undefeated in league play. Eva Millan added 11 digs, also a match high.

Whitworth used a late run in the opening set to pull away from the Blues. After trailing by four points early, Whitman reeled off five straight points to take the lead. Anderson and Sophia Dominitz bookended the run which put their team up 12-11. The two teams traded points until Whitworth pulled ahead by three at 19-16. Martinez ended the mini-run with a kill but the Bucs ran off four straight points to pull away.

The second set saw Whitworth score five straight capped by an Abby Wolverton kill to establish an early 11-6 lead. Whitman never let the set slip away until finally everything clicked and the Blues ran off five straight points highlighted by two Anderson kills and a kill and block from Sydney London. The run put the Blues ahead 19-17 and forced a Whitworth timeout. If the run was good, the response was better as the Bucs finished the set on an 8-1 run to take a two-set lead.

Whitworth's momentum carried into set three where the Bucs won handily to clinch the sweep.

Whitman is next in action on Saturday, Oct. 9 at Lewis & Clark. First serve is set for 6:00 p.m.
