Women's Volleyball Drops Five-Set Heartbreaker to Whitworth

WALLA WALLA, Wash. - In the first match of a Northwest Conference doubleheader, Megan Suka delivered a match-high 16 kills off the bench and Elyse Benavides posted a double double (11 kills, 12 digs) but the Whitman College women's volleyball team fell in five sets to Whitworth (27-29, 25-20, 25-20, 17-25, 15-12). Emma Anderson added nine kills and 19 digs for the Blues who dropped their fifth five-set match and second to Whitworth.

Four Whitworth players posted double figures in kills led by Madison Lee's 15 to go along with her 19 digs. Aleana Gallagher recorded a match-high 21 digs.

Set one saw the Blues lose a late lead then battle in extra points to grab the win. Whitman led 20-15 after kills from Ruby Matthews, Benavides and Suka, but Abby Wolverton single-handedly prevented the Blues from reaching the finish line early. Benavides posted another kill to make it a 23-18 score but Whitworth came roaring back and even had set point at 24-23. The Blues staved off two more set points before rallying for the win.

Whitman rode the momentum into set two and grabbed an early 9-3 lead on the strength of back-to-back Benavides aces. Whitworth stemmed the tide, running off a string of points and taking a two-point lead after consecutive kills from Katy Barr. The run continued with Wolverton and A'leu Akon delivering back-to-back kills and the Bucs won going away.

It was Whitworth's turn to carry the moment across sets, doing so in set three and keeping Whitman at arm's length throughout. Lee posted two kills and got in on a block as the Bucs opened the set on a 9-3 run. With Whitman trailing 20-12, Benavides drilled two straight kills and got in on a block to shave the deficit to four points, but ultimately Whitman didn't quite have enough as the Pirates held on for the win.

The Blues showed no quit and responded for a big set four win to push the match to a deciding fifth set. Whitman expanded an early one-point lead to five after Matthews won four straight points off her serve and forced Whitworth to call for time. The Bucs didn't let the set get away from them though and shaved the lead to three points. Matthews countered with a kill and won a point off her serve to push the lead back up to 21-15.

The deciding set saw the Bucs take an early lead and hold on for the win. Back-to-back kills from Benavides and Suka, coupled with a late kill from Anderson shaved the deficit to two points, but the Bucs sealed the win on their second match-point.
