Women's Volleyball Edged By Hamline, Sweeps Luther

SAINT PAUL, Minn. - The Whitman College women's volleyball team opened the St. Kate's Volleyball Tournament with a narrow five-set loss to Hamline before responding to earn a split with a straight-set victory over Luther College. Both matches were played at Hutton Fieldhouse.

The Blues (2-5) gave the host Pipers all they could handle in their afternoon match. They twice rallied from a set down before ultimately falling in five sets 25-19, 20-25, 25-15, 22-25, 15-9. Christina Boxberger drilled a career-high 19 kills in defeat with Nicole Kelly adding 10 kills and a team-high 14 digs for the double double.

Whitman returned to the court for its most decisive victory (25-21, 25-19, 25-18) and first away from home. Boxberger posted a match-high 13 kills to go along with four blocks. Megan Suka flirted with a double double with eight kills and a team-high nine digs, and Sydney London added seven kills, three digs and one block.

The opening set saw the Blues rally from a narrow but late deficit. A Sarina Stortz kill put the Norse up a point, but later back-to-back kills from Suka gave the Blues a 20-18 lead. Two quick Luther points tied the score but London, Kelly and Sophia Dominitz all posted kills as Whitman won going away.

Set two was tight as well but the Blues caught fire late to take the two-set lead. Luther tied the set at 13-13 before kills from Domintz and Suka grabbed the momentum for Whitman. London's kill later ignited a 4-0 run and the Blues cruised to the win.

Whitman sealed the win in a competitive set three but one in which the Blues never trailed.

The Blues conclude the tournament tomorrow with matches at St. Catherine and vs. Martin Luther College.
