Women's Volleyball Takes Down Willamette In Five Sets

SALEM, Ore. - Sophia Dominitz flirted with a double double with nine kills and a match-high eight blocks, Megan Suka added 15 kills and the Whitman College women's volleyball team scored a big five-set road victory over Willamette in Northwest Conference action on Friday night. Set scores were 25-27, 25-18, 20-25, 25-17, 15-10.

Tate Cadang added 25 digs for the Blues (3-9, 1-2 NWC) who earned a much needed first true road victory of the season. Neither team reached the .200 hitting clip but it was Whitman's 15-8 block advantage that carried the evening.

Dani Queja had a monster game for the Bearcats (4-4, 1-2 NWC) with 18 kills and 24 digs, both match highs. Shyla Sato added 24 digs and eight assists.

Whitman responded well after an opening set loss which went to extra points. The Blues scored five straight points midway through set two highlighted by three blocks from Kenzie Martinez, two of which Sydney London got in on. A Cadang ace and Emma Anderson kill made it a 23-17 score and the Blues closed it out.

The Bearcats led from start to finish in set three and looked prime to close out the match. Whitman had other ideas, however, and used a late fourth-set run to push the match to a deciding fifth set. Trailing 13-12, an Anderson ace and kill sparked a run of seven straight points to put the Blues in control. Kills from Domintz and Suka extended the lead to 23-14 and Whitman closed out the set.

The Blues got out in front quickly in set five after two kills and a block from Suka put Whitman up 4-1. Willamette responded though as back-to-back kills from Queja and another from Olivia Cadien tied the score at 9-9. Whitman then sealed it when a pair of Suka kills highlighted a 4-0 run and all but clinched the win for the Blues.

Next up for the Blues is a visit to Linfield on Saturday, Sept. 25. First serve is set for 6:00 p.m.
