Women's Volleyball Too Much For Lewis & Clark

PORTLAND, Ore. - Kenzie Martinez posted a match and season-high 18 kills, four others recorded double figures in digs and the Whitman College women's volleyball team dominated Lewis & Clark with a straight-set win in Northwest Conference action on Friday night. Set scores were 25-11, 25-18, 25-18.

Martinez's season-best night highlighted an impressive attacking evening for the Blues (4-12, 3-6 NWC) who hit at a .225 clip for the night including .313 in their dominant opening-set win.

The defense was there for the Blues as well as Sage King (14), Jackie Zapanta (12), Teia Magaoay (11) and Nicole Kelly (10) all recorded double figures in digs. Magaoay also added a match-high 34 assists.

Izzy Willis recorded a team best eight kills for the Pios and Katie Shimaura posted a match-high 20 digs.

Set one saw runs of six and seven unanswered points to help secure the impressive win. Whitman trailed by one point early before reeling off its first run to take an 11-4 lead. Lola Folk got it on a pair of blocks to kickstart the run, and Kelly drilled a pair of kills in the back half of the set. Later, Lilli Thompson delivered a kill to start a run of six unanswered points and the Blues ran away with the set.

Set two saw the Blues take an early lead and slowly pull away. Kills by Thompson, King and Martinez helped build a four-point lead, but the Pios ran off three unanswered points to pull within one. The Blues put some distance back between them and the Pios with kills from Thompson and Martinez, then slowly pulled away for the two-set lead.

Whitman completed the sweep after opening up an early 10-point lead in set three and never looking back. Martinez drilled four early kills to set the tone for the eventual sweep.

Next up for the Blues is a trip to Willamette on Saturday, Oct. 14. First serve is set for 6:00 p.m.
