WALLA WALLA, Wash. - With the back half of the league season underway, the streaking Whitman College men's soccer team ran its unbeaten streak to six games with a 2-2 tie over Puget Sound on Saturday at James Hayner Field.
Despite earning a result, a victory and three points was at hand late in the game until the Loggers tied the game after multiple bids to score. Served from a corner kick by Graham Hall in the 83rd minute, an unmarked Liam Elliott headed his shot past Bernie Jones in net for the Blues.
Goals were at a premium early in the first half with the Loggers striking first. Reily Reisner lofted a service near the right corner flag and found an unmarked Marko Babiak central just outside the goal box. Babiak tapped the ball low underneath Jones for the game's first goal.
Whitman responded immediately; and not once, but twice. Still under 10 minutes into the game, Edwin Romero dribbled into the penalty area and was met by a Logger defender. He touched the ball forward to Christian Gomez who had made a run ahead of him. Gomez turned and fired a ball low and to the far post past Ryan Saunders in net for the Loggers for the equalizer.
Three minutes later the Blues took the lead. With Romero again the facilitator, he found a streaking Lucas McAllister central and just inside the penalty area. McAllister took one touch and drilled his shot low and into the back of the net past Saunders.
The five-minute span proved to be all the scoring the game would feature until UPS's late equalizer.
Whitman next hosts the league's lone undefeated team in Pacific Lutheran on Sunday, Oct. 15 at 2:30 p.m.
