Women's Soccer Edged By UPS In Battle Of NWC Heavyweights

WALLA WALLA, Wash. - In a battle of Northwest Conference heavyweights, the Whitman College women's soccer team fell 1-0 to Puget Sound in an extremely competitive league contest on Saturday at James Hayner Field.

Prior to the game, a special field dedication ceremony was held honoring long-time Whitman College trustee and Walla Walla community leader Jim Hayner.

The Blues (6-4-2, 5-3 NWC) entered the game trailing the Loggers (8-3-2, 6-1-2 NWC) by one point for second in the conference standings with the second half of the league season getting underway.

The match saw excellent goal opportunities for both sides but both keepers were equal to the task. Hannah Hagler posted six saves for the Blues including a stellar save in the first half where she parried a Logger shot over the crossbar.

The Loggers broke through in the second half with the game's lone goal. Leila Hausia-Haugen rifled a shot from outside the penalty which beat the outstretched arm of Hagler. The ball bounced down off the crossbar back into the field of play where Kya Scott was in the right place at the right time and poked the rebound into the far side netting.

Whitman battled to the end but was unable to put home the equalizer.

The Blues return to the pitch on Sunday against league leader Pacific Lutheran. Kickoff at James Hayner Field is set for 2:30 p.m.
