WALLA WALLA, Wash. - In a game destined for a goal,
Virginia Hunt did just that, scoring just over 10 minutes remaining in the game to lift the Whitman College women's soccer team to a 1-0 win over Pacific Lutheran in Northwest Conference action on Sunday at Hayner Field.
"I am so happy for our players," said coach Michelle Voiland whose team swept the season series with the Lutes. "They played an incredible game today. Beating PLU twice in the season is awesome. Go Blues!"Â
With goal scoring opportunities plenty for nearly the entire game, Hunt broke through with her gamewinner in the 78th minute. Whitman earned a free kick taken by Anika Patel just 30 yards from goal. She found Hunt at the far post who scored past Abby Winkler in net for the Lutes.
The Lutes afforded themselves a great scoring opportunity late in the game, but Hannah Hagler made two point blank saves off of a corner kick to preserve the shutout.
Hagler was brilliant for the Blues in post 10 saves including the final two late in the game. Winkler posted three saves for Lutes.
The Blues will only have two days to prepare their lone conference midweek home contest. Whitman will host rival Whitworth on Wednesday, Oct. 18 at 4:30 p.m.
