WALLA WALLA, Wash. - In the first game played under the Hayner Field lights, the Whitman College women's soccer team earned a hard fought result in the Battle of the Whits, drawing 1-1 to Whitworth in Northwest Conference action on Wednesday night.
The lionshare of the early possession went to the Bucs, but it was the Blues who had the best scoring opportunities. That included several shots across the bow including a strike from Chaney Heinbaugh off the crossbar. Hannah Hagler was equal to the task on the times she was called into action, parrying several Pirate services out of harm's way.
Late in the half, Whitman had Whitworth on the ropes and nearly put home the game's first goal. The Blues got into the penalty area on multiple occasions leading to unsuccessful shot attempts by Molly Beaulieu, Kat Sand and Gracia Larson.
In what developed into a very physical second half, the Blues broke through in the 61st minute with the game's first goal. Virginia Hunt raced down the left flank with the ball and served a driven ball across the goal mouth which found Heinbaugh at the far post who knocked it into the back of the net.
The equalizer came in the 70th minute from Baylee Trejo. In similar fashion to Whitman's goal, Addison Dizzard served a ball from the left flank just outside the goal box. Trejo ran in and one-timed the cross into the far side netting to level the score.
The Blues had two serious scoring chances late in the game but couldn't produce the gamewinner.
Whitman closes out the week with a Saturday, Oct. 21 match at Pacific. Kickoff is set for 12:00 p.m.
